So today they bring my new furniture to my office on the 3rd floor (in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory Univ). The Boss Lady thought it would be best for me to be full time on that floor so that my "clients" can more easily find me. It will also hopefully help with a customer service issue that they have been having. The Clients At Large don't seem to think that the Information Services group is as responsive to their needs as they can or should be. Since I'm part of the IS team and therefore has to wear the distinctive new gold badges with my name in 28pt font, it'll be very obvious to them that someone to help them is right around the corner. For as much help as I can be that is. I'll mostly be just rerouting people to the HelpDesk to get the proper help they can. My job is as an application developer and analyst specifically on the new cluster project. I also am the junior UNIX admin. So if its cluster related, UNIX related, or just darned cool then I'm your guuy. If not, then you probably will end up more confused than you were when you walked into my office.

The good news about all this is that I think I will like it on the 3rd floor. Much nicer furniture. My own office that I don't have to share. Access to a free and well stocked kitchen with gourmet coffee on occasion. And so far the folks up there have treated so far as a research colleague and not just the guy that fixes their computers. We'll see how long that lasts :)

The rest of the week is already very very busy. No nights free at all this week. I'll have to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] ludakiss some other time. This week got away from me completely on Monday. But there will be more days next week. Hrm. Planning stuff a week in advance. I almost sound like an adult.

Nah. :-)

"Apple has confirmed that their Intel based Macs should be able to run Windows, but you will not be able to run the x86 version of OS X on any hardware platform you choose. Obviously with the switch to Intel's architecture, it is going to be much more difficult for Apple to prevent users from circumventing any protection they may have implemented to run the x86 OS on their own hardware. Even if Apple's protection is cracked, you can expect driver support to be extremely limited for configurations outside of what Apple will be shipping."

So they are switching *just* CPUs. Nothing else. This is equivalent to their switch from the Motorol 68000 series to the IBM PowerPC chips from a while ago. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] uxmal for reminding me about this). And that worked well.

So this frees up Apple from having to do negative ads campaigning liek they have on their front page. You konw the ones that say how much faster a G5 cpu is versus a PowerPC chip running at a much slower speed. Its true mind you. But if that is the case, why on earth would they be moving to an inferior cpu?
Just goes to show that business is about making money and not necessarily about being right :-)

So I retract my statement earlier. This is not the death knell of Apple. This is the death knell of diversity in microcomputer CPUS. The only way to get a decent alternative cpu now with any support is to buy a game console.

*sigh*

its done

Moving is done. All is well.

I still need a drink. Luckily I'm going to solve that problem later tonight. In less than 1.5 hours to be exact.
