So I've been using an extension plug-in to Firefox to read Livejournal for a few months now. The package is called "rss reader panel". That package is now evolved into something called "sage" which is *much* better. It makes me happier and happier to leave the Web interface and Semagic alone when it comes to reading things.

If you use Firefox, I strongly recommend downloading it and trying it out. You can find it on the stndard Firefox plug-in sites.

Oh yeah, the most comprehensive site on Firefox expensions that I have found is http://ExtensionsMirror.nl

It works pretty well but I still haven't figured out how to truly set it up for things like showing how many comments are in a thread (or if there are new ones), user icons, etc. I still have to click and view the regular web interface to get any of that.

yeah, I noticed that too

Unfortunately, Sage (and the older rss reader panel it was based on) aren't really designed for hierarchical reading of rss feeds. I think that will take a custom LJ plugin to do.

Which I would love to write except that I don't have time to learn Yet Another Programming Environment (XUL) to make the necessary changes. I used to think that things like Logjam or Semagic would do the trick but quite frankly they don't.

What we need is "nn" for LJ. That's "no news" which is a news reader for UNIX.

Yeah, I remember nn. I wouldn't mind rn either. :)
