*better* code (including automatic, configurable crossposting back to LJ, and the separation of "friends lists" into "reading lists" and "access lists", each with their own, separate, filterset), a much more personable, responsive, leadership team (two ex-LJ'ers)... also, DW is *strictly* member-funded.
If you read a typical LJ News post, the comment thread goes like,
bitch hell complain moan rant rave raise red flag posture general drama
If you read a typical DW news post, it goes like
Awesome! woo hoo! Wunderbar! Oh, you missed this little case right here Oops, we'll get right on that. Fixed! Win and pie!
Also, when using automatic crossposting, you can configure it where you can *either* allow comments both places, *or* turn comments off on LJ and have them post comments on DW with OpenID. (And maybe vice versa?)
If you want an invite code, say the word.
(And if you wanted to move a whole community, like, say, partyatvernards, you can write them and request enough invite codes for your *whole community* to move... and they'll do that for you. Just because they're awesome.)
I waited two years, and was on the very cusp of dropping a copy of LJ on my own server, when Mark and Denise announced. What they've done is a whole helluva lot better than anything I could've pulled off in my copious spare time. It is seriously very close to everything we ever wanted LJ to be... and they're open to suggestions (and are quite willing to explain in gory detail why something won't work if there are political ramifications for it). They're also extremely committed to having as little restriction on what you post as they can get away with.
It's not *quite* worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize, but it is awesome and win and pie and if I ever win the lottery, remind me, these people need a chunk. Srsly. (although what I'm doing right now is trying to spread the word so folks will flock and they *won't* need a chunk 'cause they'll already have it. :)
I think there have been a few reasons - the Russian takeover, pushing ads on people, but also their treatment of fanfiction and fan art. Back in the days of "LJ boldthrough", they woke up one morning and decided that large chunks of fanfiction was pornography and started deleting accounts and communities. Some people hadn't made backups, and data was lost, drama ensued, etc.

Full disclosure: Just a VERY satisfied customer.

Date: 2011-03-28 01:43 pm (UTC)And moving the *entirety* of your LJ, icons, comments, custom friends groups, and all, is dead easy. I forgot to mention that...
If nothing else, you've got a backup.
