history in the making
Nov. 4th, 2008 01:08 amEarlier tonight, before midnight, I had been lost in thought. I was sitting here kinda of in awe that on Nov. 4th 2008, the United States would be making history.
You see, I like many other Americans, was thinking that regardless of who wins the Presidential Election, we would have have something like never before . We would have an under-represented minority in the White House: Either a female vice president or a Black president. And I was just stunned. How much progress we have made in this country!
Then a discussion that
dragonzord05 and I had a couple of weekends ago came to mind.
We ARE making history but not for the reasons I thought. We are making history by affirming again that the Dream that Martin Luther King had is still just that, a dream. Because the fact that we even bother to care that Obama is a Black man means that they are still judging him by the color of his skin and not just the content of his character. And its not reserved to Obama. The fact that Palin is female makes some judge the content of her character more harshly on some matters such as Women's Issues.
The fact of the matter is that this election just shows us how far we haven't come in so many ways.
I'm not going to say that I don't care who you vote for. I do. I really do. I hope that you have carefully analyzed what each candidate has done over his/her political career and how they have said they are going to try and run this country. And I hope you have carefully balanced the various issues that they both agree and disagree with you on. And I hope that you vote in a way that reflects the best decision that you could have made with the information that you had available.
And I hope the race and sex of the candidates were very low on your priority list of factors if they were there at all.
If the Dream is to be realized, it has to start with ourselves.
