The Great Big Music Project

I was chatting with our favorite local soldier boy, libidoergosum, and I mentioned that I was going to send him some MP3s of music from my collection for him to enjoy. I suspect when he’s not on patrol in 117 Defree Farenheit weather that he spends a lot of time reading and such. I personally have about 27GB of mp3s now which is my entire collection. That is only 7 DVDs when you think about it.

Then it occurred to me that if I’m going to be shipping DVDs to him in Iraq, maybe some of his other friends would like to contribute.

So I’m volunteering to be the coordinator on collecting music on to a hard drive and then burning it onto DVDs to ship off to him. I already have a stack of DVD-Rs and few DVD-burners as well. All I need is the music.

I’m willing to come to you with a portable hard drive and copy the music. Or I’ll rip the CDs if you don’t have them in MP3 format. I’ll collage the data so that hopefully we don’t have too much overlap (i.e. not more than one copy of the same CD). It’ll be harder to do with individual songs of course but I’ll do my best.

My boss and my boss’ boss have opened a new position in my group that will take all the non-cluster related responsibilities off my shoulders. This leave me to focus on High Performance Computing and Computational Science. This leaves me very happy and means that I might not be looking for a new job quite so hard.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience managing and administrating server hardware and operating system in an academic production environment. Direct experience with Dell PowerEdge servers and hardware, Enterprise Red Hat Linux, Veritas NetBackup solutions, and EMC Storage products. Proven ability to:

Manage, execute, and validate backup and restoration services

Administer account management system

Administer DNS, Cyrus IMAP, SAMBA, Apache HTTP, and Macromedia Cold Fusion application

Respond to and troubleshoot user issues

Design and execute disaster recovery tests

Optimize services

Research emerging technologies and practices and assess and evaluate their feasibility and value to the environment

Additional expertise in HIPAA, Nagios monitoring software, and project management would be a plus.

Ability to participate in the design and execution of:

Standard operating procedures and configurations

Documentation of system services and configurations

Disaster recovery plans and fault trees

Current and future state of the server environment

The ability to provide troubleshooting and problem resolution in a UNIX and Windows environment; take the technical lead on projects and upgrades; be in a team environment and to work independently; work with various levels of employees, other teams, and management are important to the success of this position.
