The following is the winning entry from an annual contest at Texas A &M University calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term. This year's term was Political Correctness.

The winner wrote:

"Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical
minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which
holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd
by the clean end."

Yeah. I tend to view political correctness more as a corollary to the Orwellian assertion that "all [animals/people] are equal, only some are more equal than others." The underlying basis of political correctness seems to be that no amount of offense to the majority or mangling and obfuscation of the language is too high a price to pay to ensure that no member of a hypothetical minority is ever confronted even innocently with a term that they feel offended by or have been told they should feel offended by, from the majority, but it's perfectly OK for them to use language as offensive as they like about each other and about the majority. It's part of the idea that being a minority, even self-defined and self-declared, automatically makes you oppressed and therefore somehow privileged, and that this privilege then entitles you to do to others exactly what you are screaming is being done to you.

But it is a lovely figure of speech. :)


(Footnote: I'm told by Aussie friends that when the whole political-correctness movement came to Australia, the Aussies listened to what they had to say, then basically said "Right, you've said your piece, now bugger off." It's one of the things that makes me seriously think at times about whether Australia might not be a better place to live than the US. Except that the Australian government has bought into the whole "reduce crime by disarming the victims" thing....)
