Read about it here.

Apparently a custodian was injured when he picked up the first of three packages and it exploded. No one was was injued but a good portion of the campus was evacuated.

They are tentatively calling it a "terrorist act".

Holy Crap! That is horrible!

But I would lean more towards disgruntal student than terrorist act (but I guess they are one in the same)

Back in my day at Tech, if someone in my class built something unstable that exploded almost killing someone, you know what we called that?

A Tuesday!

The descriptions of the 'devices' from the radio this morning sounds more like a 2-liter rupturing from a buildup of pressure than an actual 'explosive device'. According to other news I've read the custodian had ringing in the ears but no other listed injuries. This jives as rupturing 2-liters are very loud, but not very dangerous. Unless some other details are released that change the details(IE, an actual explosive compound), I honestly can't believe this is a "terrorist act". For the initial investigation treating it as a "terrorist act" is expected and justified. IMHO if the details don't change, continuing to treat it as a "terrorist act" is posturing, grandstanding and complete hogwash.

"Explosive chemical compound"

Aluminum foil and drain opener is an 'explosive chemical compound', that just happens to produce an 'explosive gas' - hydrogen. The picture I saw showed a 16oz soda bottle, so I'm going by the assumption that it was a prank gone awry rather than intent to do harm. Anybody smart enough to get into Tech should be able to research how to make a REAL bomb if they were inclined to hurt people.

pretty much anything can be explosive, especially gases under pressure. if i had to guess, most ameteur homemade (read: i found it on the internet) recipes mix stuff to create some sort of gas, which expands and pops its container.

it is an explosive. not a high explosive like dynomite, though.
