I've been writing an essay, well more of a rambling set of musings out of my head on the concept of Beauty and what it means to be beautiful and why is it important and all that. People often say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that isn't quite right. There are several types of beauty and the one that we hate to talk about but all know exists is the collective gestalt of what is beautiful which tends to promote a certain "look" that we know isn't realistic.

In any event, this
web site talks about physical beauty. i think it deserves perusal.

Oh wow. What does it say about me that I didn't find one of those faces held up as an example to be unattractive? I must be a very forgiving person. What I find genuinely unattractive have alot more to do with self care and hygene. I don't like an unkempt appearance, pasty skin, acne from obvious lack of care, or dirty hair and clothing. I'm not generally attracted to someone who is obese. I don't judge them, but I don't find them attractive. And by obese I mean *obese* not thick, zaftig, or volumptuous. Geeze, according to that site, I might be considered unattractive. That's disturbing. I have narrow eyes, and small lips. I have a round nose. I have, at the moment, a weak chin. I'm going to go crawl under a cat, and eat potato chips neuroticly now...

interesting, and sadly what I've seen as truth in today's world. I'd like to read your essay if you ever share it.

Do you keep up with [livejournal.com profile] jenkitty these days? She posted an interesting piece about a Dove ad campaign with the subject of "real beauty" you may want to look into.

Seems they've noticed that what passes for "beautiful" in women these days is a pretty narrow band and believe it shouldn't be so.I hope they manage to beat some sense into people, as, in my opinion, they are absolutely correct.

As the bit you linked to goes, I don't think the unattractive pictures are such because they're unattractive, it's because they don't actually look _real_. Eyes too big, parts too close to other parts...
