So I finally got a chance to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] wiggyfish. She's doing fine but is having some adjustment problems at her new job. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her. Its a great opportunity but sometimes the initial buy-in is really costly on the happiness scale.

Found out something really interesting about the server that I work on as well. If you plug in fiber optic cables into the fabric switch into the wrong port, the switch is smart and detects that things are misconfigured and will disable the port for you. Unfortunately, I found this out when the switch disabled the ports that connect to the computational cluster that I manage. And since the san switch is the switch for the entire san, we can't just reboot it unscheduled without killing every other connection to it which is the *entire* rest of the department. So I've scheduled some downtime for friday and we'll see if that fixes our issue. I really hope it does. I know very little about the actual implementation of san stuff at the vendor level. All my experience is with its evil twin, NAS.

I also found out that my roommate lost his job yesterday. The company he works for, Atlanta Jet, hired him as a web developer. He's got lotsof work experience doing that sort of stuff. But his speciality is the graphics site of that stuff. He's a graphic/digital artist by training. He's not a techie. He knows how to use Dreamweaver and Flash and other stuff to build really fancy web pages and incredibly beautiful and usable web pages but he's not so savvy on the server side technology. He knows squat about databases and try server side programming and such. And they knew that when they hired him. But apparently they say that his set of skills aren't a good match. Which is a bit depressing since he's scheduled to move into his apartment July 1. I kinda feel bad for him in that regard. Nobody likes to be in a tight spot. So if you know anyone that is hiring a very talented graphic/digital artist then send em my way and I'll put the two of them in contact with each other.

Oh yeah, I still need to finish de-lousing [livejournal.com profile] amary's machine so that she can be Internet ready again. That sucker had more Trojan horses and spyware programs on it than I thought reasonably possible. At present, I'm just trying to save all her .mp3s onto a CD so that I can just trash the sucker and re-install. The machien keeps hanging up during the scanning using either AVG, AdAware or Spybot. Methinks that one of the viruses out there is smart and is doing a "scorched earth" kind of scenario during the scans.

Ah well. Back to work. I switched to using logjam under linux instead of ye old semagic under windows. Not sure if I like it in the long term. I feel like I could do better. Maybe I'll hack the code to do some interesting stuff that I like.
