What a morning.

So I'm sitting at my office at work because the backups gave us some sort of strange error at might night last night and said that things didn't go as planned. We haven't changed the firewall settings yet so I can't easily access the UNIX machines from home (since I use comcast and we blacklisted them for a while due to some bad spam issues). Therefore I'm on campus.
Figured it was a good time to do an update.
I went to the Stone Mountain Highland Games Whiskey Tasting friday. Met
unrepentant there. Discovered first hand that the Johnny Walker Green Label is damned good but the Black Label is decidely unpleasant. Its definitely not considered alcohol abuse to not finish your drink if that is in your cup. Also, the Craggomore was about as whimpy a whisky as i have ever had. I mean embarrassingly wimpy. I think that sprite has a stronger nose and I'm sure coca-cola has more bite. Ended up grabbing dinner at the local hotel restaurant and catching up on each other's lives. I am definitely going to have to make the College Lesbian Experience concert. This promises to be amusing. The music might not be bad either.
Work has been annoying and unpleasant. My co-worker, John, is taking a job at Google. His last day is Nov. 3rd. Now luckily, my boss has managed to hire somone to fill the already existing empty positiong of a Senior Unix Admin. In fact it is
wiggyfish. So there is hope. however, despite her astounding mental qualities, she is not John (there aren't many folks that are) and we still need a senior admin that can do all the magic that JOhn can do. In the mean while, I'm being dragged off of my post as Cluster Specialist and being relagated to Fill-In Unix Admin Guru. But the problem is that I Don't Want To Be An Admin. Really, I don't. I quit this job to go fiddle around on a phd for 10 years. THe last thing I want to do is go back to that. Especailly at 10K less money than the job would reasonable demand. And on Fridya my boss tells me that I will most likely have to do this for another few months. Grrrr.
So I've been snooping around other places looking for jobs. And it appears that I have a few options even on Emory's campus. More pay. Doing more science than administration. And working with super cool 1024-cpu/core cluster that we are about to purchase for the campus. Can't beat that with a stick. Job won't be ready for a while so at least I can spend plenty of time making sure that
wiggyfish is up to speed on the non-technical stuff. She's more than savvy enoguh to handle the geek bits. Its the personalties, quirks and other crap that you have to pick up on.
And who knows, maybe its time for me to finally leave Georgia and go visit another state. There are plenty of job opportunities in other cities.
The diabetes is under control. The only real problem is that I need to cut back on my social drinking. In the last year, I've taken to going out one night a week and doing happy hour with some colleages at work. I can still do it, but I can't to it every week as I can't drink alcohol with the meds I take so I have to skip a dose to imbibe. Skipping meds isn't a good idea. I have permission from my doctor to do it but he told me not to do it very frequently. and once a week is frequently. I don't mind going to happy hour. I just won't be imbibing. If the company I keep minds it, then I won't be keeping their company anymore. :-)
I ended up having to go down to my mom's house to swap our her old computer for a new one. Her used Dell got killed by a bad transformer blowing so she bought one of the AMD cpu based Dells. Very nice and should keep her happy for another 3 years when the warranty expires. The reason I had to go do this is because both of the two computer specialists in the closest time to her were so busy they didn't have time to take the job. She's been without a cmoputer for about 3 weeks now and her new one had been sitting in the box for a week as well. So I felt bad about it. Thus the trip to mom's house. Every trip to mom's house involving a computer is an all day affair. This was no exception. At least I got a chance to catch up with some folks on the phone during the 1 hour drive down there. And back. *sigh*
I'm in the process of divesting myself of computers again. I realized that I had a lot of computers that weren't really doing anything but were sitting around in my house. I figured if they aren't turned on and I haven't used them in 6 months then perhaps I should sell them. At least that way the money would be useful. Now I just have to price them on Craigslist and hope they wander away.
chitownshae is coming to town next weekend (weekend before Halloween). If you wanted to make sure you see her then you should drop me or her an email. She's here until Monday so there really isn't a lot of time but I'm sure she'll do her best to accomodate all those folks that do want to catch up. She's staying with me so you can reach her via my cell phone when she's down here if you don't have hers. She arrives late Friday night so we probably won't be making Margarita Friday.
That's it for now. I need to start updating my journal more. Just seems like I don't have time to sit in front of a keyboard and write anymore. And I really enjoy the process of writing even if it isn't anything particular important.
I need to work on that :-)
