vernard: (death of superman)

Unless you were living underneath a rock, you probably have heard that Christopher Reeves died of complications due to an infection from a bed sore. Most of us remember him from his portrayal as Superman in the immensely popular four movies way back when. It was the first really big superhero movie and he got to portray arguably the greatest superhero of them all: The Big Red "S" himself.

Christopher Reeves became even more of a hero to many when he managed to fight back from a spine injury that left him totally paralyzed. He managed to eventually obtain some movement in his hands. and he was even able to eventually talk unasisted by a breathing machine for extended periods. He came to epitomize to many people, the Man of Steel in spirit if not in body.

There is a song by the Crash Test Dummies called "Superman's Song" that was always quite dear to me. It was written back in the mid 90s and it focused on the fact that in the comic books, they actually killed Superman. I mean dead. He didn't stay dead but at the time they were doing it, there was actually a lot of speculation as to whether or not they would do it. It shook many die hard Superman fans to their knees. You just don't kill Supes.
You. Just. Don't.

But anyway, the song discussed the fact that Superman had a thankless job and that the average person never gave much thought to exactly how longly and bleak a life he actually lived. The actual sacrifices that he had to give. Its very hard when you think about it. As was said in the comic a few months before he died and even parroted in the television series "Lois and Clark, "Clark Kent is who I am. Superman is what I do."

I have a copy of the song on my ftp server for those of you that have never heard of it. Be warned, its a tear jerker. Left me in tears on several occasions and now that Mr. Reeves is dead I suspect the effect will be even more prounced. You can get a copy of it here.. Enjoy

p.s. Thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] zorathenne for snagging the icon so I could snag it from her.
