So this weekend my car “check engine” light comes on. I knew my car was about 1000 miles overdue for an oil change but that shouldn’t cause the light come on. So I scrap the rest of my plans for Sunday, stay home and make arrangements to go to the Dealer on Monday morning. As usual, the dealer makes you wait.
nearly 3 hours later I get an estimate for $500. Which is fine. But get this, the guy says that we dont’ know if THAT will fix the problem. I’m like so I’m paying $500 for a guess?!?!? He says, no, its just that this is replacing a sensor but the sensor could be fine and then that means that what its sensing is actually broken and if that is the case then we have to replace the broken bit. And that would be another $800 just for the part and then another $200 for labor. I replay so you want me to pay for you to figure out what the problem is?
so assuming for one seecond that I did pay for this, that is $1500 into the car. My question is:
At what point do you consider buying another vehicle rather than fixing the one you have?
