I'm that guy that everybody knows who knows a little bit about everything. I'll talk your head off but you'll enjoy every minute of it. Hardcore geek with a Prince Charming glaze and a pinch of Thug sprinkled on for decoration. I walk the razor's edge, dance in twilight, and spend karma like its going out of style.

Oh yeah, and I'm an eternal graduate student academic.

With no sense of tact.

p.s. I can fake diplomacy when necessary. Diplomacy is the art of saying "nice doggie" while you back up and feel around for a stick.

I treat the term "friend" in Livejournal terminology as "subscriber". I don't friend you so that I can read your posts. I friend you so that you can read my private posts that I might happen to write. Friending you does not mean that you are my friend. True friendship takes a helluva lot more than clicking on a button. My friends know who they are and don't need Livejournal to validate it.

You do NOT have to ask my permission to add me to your friends list. Feel free to add me if you like reading it. I don't mind if you make a post notifying me that you have friended me though as I sometimes don't notice that for quite some time.

I use non-web based software to read Livejournal that doesn't give a rat's ass if I have friended you or not. You should only friend me if you want me to read your private posts. More than 99% of all my posts are public so you really aren't missing anything if I haven't friended you to be honest. So don't have your feelings hurt if I haven't. If you really want to be on the inside, then join partyatvernards for the real fun. And no, I didn't create that community. Blame libidoergosum.

Oh yeah, don't include me on a sex filter by default unless I've met you in real life, spoken to you on the phone, or unless I have explicitly given you some reason to think that I would want to be on it. Why? What is going on in my sex life is infinitely more interesting to me than what is going on in yours and I don't talk about mine in my journal. So I'm pretty much almost guaranteed to not be interested in yours. If I want to know the gritty details I'll ask.

I am sometimes "one of the girls". Don't ask me to explain this as I haven't figured it out myself. Apparently I'm just so inoffensive that women have been known to ignore the fact that I'm male and undress in front of me or have me examine their breasts for aesthetic value or come get into the hot tub with them when they are naked. I don't understand this and I've given up. Unfortunately, my morals and ethics prevent me from taken advantage of this situation. Yeah, my life sucks. I know. You don't have to say it.

V's Rules to Life

I live by these rules in general. Some are "original" and others are blatantly stolen from others.

  • Its easier to tell the truth than to keep up with all the lies and to whom they were spoken.

  • The only person you should never lie to is yourself.

  • You cannot save anyone from themself. You can barely save yourself.

  • Pure altruism doesn't exist. You get pleasure out of helping someone else out.

  • Never attribute to competence what blind luck and stubborness can equally explain.

  • Never attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity and/or ignorance.

  • Solving the problem is better than fixing the symptom. Distinguishing between the two is difficult.

  • Always try to keep your goal in mind when you perform an action. Especially when it involves people.

  • The long term may be most important but if you can't get through the short term it won't matter.

  • Every bad guy thinks that he is the good guy. Or doesn't give a damn. Irregardless, the results are the same.

  • History is written by the winner. And the winner isn't tried for war crimes.

  • Learn from other folks mistakes. You don't have time to make them all yourself.

  • Anyting worth fighting over is worth fighting dirty over.

  • Where there is a will, there is a way to subvert it.

  • Change is neither good nor bad. It simply is. How you deal with the results of change is what is important.

  • If you are going to take credit for your successes then you must take credit for your mistakes.

  • When confused about why something has occurred in politics, follow the money.

  • Sex does not imply love. Good sex also does not imply love.

  • There is someone for everyone. Somtimes more than just one someone. However, they may not ever meet. Deal.

  • Love does not imply marriage. Marriage is not love. Love is love. Don't confuse the two.

  • Without exception, all religion at its core is subjective belief. If it wasn't, they wouldn't call it faith.

  • Never make a threat you don’t intend to carry out. Also, don't make a threat that you can NEVER carry out.

  • Don’t mess with the devil in his own backyard. Unless its also YOUR backyard.

  • All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Some battles you have to fight, even if the cost is death.

  • Know what battles NOT to fight. Know when a battle is going to cost you more than winning is worth. Sometimes it is better to walk away.

  • Never get angry because someone stops doing you a favor. It was a favor. They didn't have to do it at all.

  • Stuff can be replaced. If a person is acting like "stuff" then this rule applies.

  • Loyalty beyond oneself. We are lucky if in this world there are one or two people we truly trust at our backs. Treat these people as if they are yourself.

  • Nobody will ever understand you completely.

  • You can only speak for yourself. Even if others ask or require you to speak for them.

  • There will always be a major distortion between what you know, what you will be able to communicate, and what people will then comprehend.

  • Life has no intrinsic meaning. That is like asking if a rock has meaning. It doesn't have to mean anything. It simply is.

  • Much of my life is directed by things preceding me and therefore out of my control without long term exhaustive efforts to change them. And even then, the results might be minor. We are ultimately subject to forces beyond us, natural selection, laws of accelerating returns, etc. This does not mean, however, that everything is out of our control.

  • Humans will always seem irrational as a species.

  • Your emotions will always interfere with your sense of truth. But they might not always dominate them.

  • Life is composed of layers of visible and invisible cliches and story lines

  • What people tell you or how others view you will inevitably affect you in some way. Fairness is not a significant component in these cases.

  • You will sometimes be the vehicle of stupid actions that are equally as inane as the sins of others

  • You will always have bias. You may not always act on them.

  • There will always be so much more beyond your awareness.

  • Not everything is possible

  • You will always be subject to the needs of your containing vehicles: physical body, relationships, family, house, nation, car, etc..

  • Because of the nature of time, everything that persists requires maintenance.

  • And last but most definitely not least:
Always be willing to accept that you are completely wrong on everything that you believe in and understand about life and the universe. There has yet to be any objective proof of an Absolute Truth.

I'm one of the card carrying Good Guys(tm). Complete with white hat and 5-pointed silver star. Always have been and always will be. I eat Sith for breakfast and use light to banish the darkness. Don't get me wrong. I'm done my bad deeds from time to time and I'm sure I'm going to do more. But I always seek redemption and I have been lucky enough to find it. I used to be a paladin but I hung up my shield and sword a few years ago. I still rescue fair maidens from time to time and I do still love a good dragon slaying. But I'm old and cynical these days and I figure that nobody needs rescuing more than once. After that, learn how to do it yourself.

Dedicated to all those Paladins still fighting the good fight...

And the world will be better for this
that one man, scorned and covered with scars,
still strove with his last ounce of courage

To reach the unreachable stars!

Dalai Lama’s 18 rules for living

At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama apparently issued eighteen rules for living.

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three Rs:
1. Respect for self
2. Respect for others
3. Responsibility for all your actions.
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you have never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

A few words on knighthood:

My Lords, a knight must be hardy, courteous, generous, loyal, and fair of speech: ferocious to his foe, frank and debonair to his friend.... Seek therefore this day to do deeds that will deserve to be remembered, for every new knight should make a good beginning.
