It basically says that with the exception of not returning to the moon, the plan is sound.

Thoughts? If you work in the NASA/Space industry, please note that if replying :)

I posted recently about Apple basically forcing its developers to use only its development tools. I thought that this corralled the programmers and was extremely draconian.

Well, I also like to present the other or perhaps I should say "rest" of the story. Draconian techniques may corral programmers but they can also give them an advantage as well. For example, its easier to migrate them all en masse to a new environment.

Takea a gander at a very plausible reason for Apple's decision OTHER than just to piss off Adobe.

hattip to SlashDot for this info.

An argument to be made about immigrant babies and citizenship
A rebuttal and analysis

I know that "illegal immigrants" are a big issue in America right now. I thought I'd present some info relating to it on both sides.

Talk about being fenced in...

I know that Apple likes to sell their products as appliances. But fencing the developers in like this is a bit much.

I have always thought that I find myself extremely uninteresting and boring.

That being said, it my "clone" were female, I think it would be love at first sight :)

All you Neil Gaiman fans will be happy to know that there is an An American Gods themed gathering happening around Halloween this year.

I'm curious as to how the costume contest will play out. Most cosplay is based off of visual media such as movies and comics. Since American Gods hasn't had a visual representation created yet, I'm really curious as to how people will interpret the various characters.....

I've accepted a position as a Senior System Administrator at the Center for Comprehensive Informatics at Emory University ( It was a substantial pay increase, responsibilities increase and has tons of opportunities for further advancement. But first and foremost I'll be working with some of the best computer scientists on the planet solving some of the most interesting Large Scale problems that exist. I'm quite excited.

The first six months will be a lot of long hours but I'm looking at it as an investment in the future of CCI and my own career.

I start May 1st.

Although I think most of the readers of my livejournal have found this info elsewhere, I post it here for posterity and on the off chance someone hasn't bee informed:

This morning, [ profile] irana passed away sometime between 1am and 6:45am.

Do not be alarmed if you see her logged into Facebook or some other social site. She was logged into her computer when it occurred and nothing has been touched at the moment.

Her immediate family are at her place and I believe they are receiving calls as time permits

An acquaintance of mine is about to travel to his home country of Haiti to help out in the recovery and rebuilding efforts. Some friends of his have purchased him an Acer Netbook running windows 7 starter and a digital camera with 4GB SD cards. He has asked me to get all his sofware installed on it and such so that he can properly maintain it while he is in Haiti. I've got Microsoft Office 2007 on there for him since that is what he was using. I also placed, Firefox, adobe reader, CCleaner, Defraggler, Speccy, and InSSIDer (an open source NetStumbler type package).

I was wondering what other useful software should he have? I only recently returned to the world of windows with my own ultra-light notebook and the only things that I can recommend is Linux which isn't an option for him (seriously, don't want to go down that path right now).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm finally moving that enormously large and heavy entertainment system this Saturday, March 6th. I have myself and the soon-to-be-former housemate but this thing is REALLY heavy. I could use 2 more folks to help out. Anytime on Saturday that you can make it will work as you are doing *me* a favor. I will adjust my schedule accordingly.

Can drop me email at or reply here.

P.S. I'm donating the entertainment center to the Goodwill. If someone would like it then its free to a good home.

I found it interesting although not particularly unique. And I thought I would share.

Does anyone else think that wearing of the ash cross on the forehead on Ash Wednesday is so distinctive as wearing a burqa?

Yeah, its only done one day a year. And its not just women. But its very very distinctive. I wonder if France will outlaw that....

If you have the time and are at all interested in the history of medical breakthrougs, take some time and read this article about Henrietta Lacks.

I've been reading the responses on that particular article. I found it interesting that one of them said "its just another example of Whites taking advantage of Blacks". While I can understand this anger and such, I have to answer the question:

"Do you think things would have been different if the person had been another race?"

I think the answer is "no". The only color that matters for business is green.

Now the question I *do* have is now that the descendants of Henrietta Lack are aware of what is going on, why have they not sued the living daylights out of all the companies that are doing research based on it? I suspect there are several law firms that would take the case happily.
